In Order: Light Reactive Collage

Everything we do is segmented into precise units of time. Working 8 hours a day. 5 days a week. We follow 12 and 24 hours clocks. But for the majority of human history…this was not how we lived.

This piece mimics a calendar to show how the Industrial Revolution invented modern time. Before this, things didn’t take a ‘certain amount' of time. They just took as long as they took. Using light and a traditional design grid to create a six-day factory workweek (as was the norm), this collage moves between eras to illustrate this shift from natural rhythm to human control.
