The work is a light-reactive collage exploring how our modern sense of time was invented during the Industrial Revolution, harking to Manchester's heritage. It visually demonstrates how our lives, once measured by the sun rising and setting have become segmented into precise units of time, according to factory work.
It completely shifts between two collage overlays. Either collage disappears or emerges under different coloured lights, revealing either time period with a relevant quote. The first collage depicts pre industrial life (orange), with its curves, organic lines, and irregularity. It is contrasted with the angular corners, straight lines, architectural precision of the second collage (blue). The calendar grid visually demonstrates how time orders both page and person; both chronologically and visually.
References to Manchester are weaved within the collage, in the photography and nature imagery.
